Kendall Betts - Horn

Kendall Betts
J. Kendall and Eva W. Betts Memorial Chair

Kendall Betts has enjoyed a varied and distinguished career spanning five decades. The Philadelphia native studied at Interlochen Arts Academy and graduated from the Curtis Institute of Music and the University of Pennsylvania in 1969.

Beginning his professional career at the age of 17, Kendall has performed with seven major orchestras as well as with major chamber music organizations, recording and motion picture studios, and as a member of the North Country Chamber Players since their inception.

A dedicated educator who has served as an adjunct professor at many universities and music schools, he is also the founder and director of the Kendall Betts Horn Camp, a unique, three-week seminar and retreat for horn players of all ages and abilities held annually at Camp Ogontz in Lyman, NH.

Ken all now lives year round in Sugar Hill since retiring from the solo horn position of the Minnesota Orchestra in 2004 and currently teaches at the University of New Hampshire.

His biggest challenge now, though, is the design and manufacturing of French horns from scratch! He bought America's leading custom horn manufacturer, Lawson Horns, in 2006, and moved the shop from Maryland to Bethlehem, where he and his staff forge metal into sound!
