Donald Palma
Don Palma, double bassist, conductor and educator, is a founding member of the North Country Players and the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra with whom he has toured worldwide.
He has recorded over 70 CDs. He received his formal education at the Juilliard School and was a member of the Los Angeles Philharmonic and Principal Bass of the National Atrs Centre Orchestra in Ottawa. As a chamber musician, Palma has appeared in recital with Deitrich Fischer-Dieskau, Jean-Pierre Rampal, Jan DeGaetani, and Jorge Bolet and at numerous festivals and societies.
He was Music Director of the San Francisco Contemporary Music Players from 1998-2000 and received two ASCAP Chamber Music America Awards for Adventurous Programming of Music in 1999 and 2000. He has conducted the Odense Symphony in Denmark, at the Casals Festival in Puerto Rico, and at the Lincoln Center Chamber Music Society.
Palma is currently on the faculties of the Yale School of Music and the New England Conservatory where he is Director of the NEC Chamber Orchestra. Don has recently been named Music Director of the Symphony-by-the-Sea in Salem, MA.
He lives in Newton, MA, with his wife, Maira, and their 10 year old son, Miles.
